My Visit to Cornell University

Hello again friends,

Today I accompanied one of my apartment-mates to her classes. I definitely had an interesting and diverse day at Cornell University. Since my apartment-mate is a biology major, I was expecting all her classes to be biology/farming related. Boy was I off.

The day started off with sculpture. I was helping to hold her model together while she assembled a bigger version made of plywood. All the tools looked so scary and I don't think she really knew what she was doing. I guess this is the first time she's really been around tools like that. At one point she even broke the professor's precious drill bit, which he always carries around in his pocket. Ooops...

After sculpture, it was off to physics. I was pretty intrigued, but I think my apartment-mate was asleep for the latter half of that lecture. The topic of the day was geometrical optics and I learned a lot about rainbows and prisms. There were also a few cool (and colorful) demos.

Apparently in this physics class they have what is called "clicker questions" where the students have their own personal clicker registered to them and they answer questions given to them on a sheet of paper at the beginning of class. Well I've never seen a system quite like this, so I decided to borrow my apartment-mate's clicker and answer the questions. She was asleep anyway. First I had to turn on the clicker...

then I carefully pondered my answer. I got one correct out of two. Not bad for a field mouse new to the physics scene! I was pretty proud.

I was looking at some flyers and posters after class and lost track of time!

After physics I had organic chemistry. I had heard horror stories about this class. Since I got sidetracked with the flyers I was running a little late. So I ran to the chemistry building. Luckily it wasn't that far.

Thankfully, I got to the chemistry lecture hall on time and found a decent, but rather large, seat. I was getting the feeling that the typical organic chemistry student was much bigger than me. The prof was really neat because he had an awesome Irish accent. In some ways it was a little distracting because all I could think of at some points was "gee, I wish he would say 'catch me lucky charms!'" But I digress...

My apartment-mate had to work at the Cornell Ornithology Lab so I decided to meet her there. I went to ask where the shuttle to the lab stopped to pick people up, but I asked the wrong person. I guess she really had somewhere to go. The good news is that I figured it out on my own eventually.

Well, that was my first day at Cornell. This is me right before I got on the shuttle going to the Ornithology Lab. I'll have to save my Ornithology Lab experiences for my next post as I am getting a little tired. Right now I feel the need for some almond tea and a little nibble on a shortbread cookie.

Much love,

LFM
